With almost thirty years of experience as a translator, I have observed the interplay between tradition and innovation in linguistic evolution. A significant moment in my career was witnessing the integration of the term ‘компьютер‘ (computer) into the Russian language. What was the translator’s dilemma?Previously, we consistently and relentlessly translated it as ‘электронно-вычислительная машина’ (electronic calculating machine) or ‘ЭВМ’ (ECM), in accordance with established norms. However, with the advancement of technology, I found myself at the forefront of its integration into everyday language. The term ‘компьютер’ was not officially recognised and included into the dictionaries of foreign words until 1989.
Today, we are accustomed to using many new words from the world of IT and social media, such as ‘блог’ (blog), ‘лайк’ (like) or ‘пост’ (post). However, the acceptance of new words outside the computer world remains questionable.
Compliance
In recent years, the Russian language has adopted the term ‘комплаенс’ (compliance), which is already widely used in the banking and management sectors. Although not yet included in foreign language dictionaries, as a translator, I must balance linguistic accuracy with effective communication. However, I must exercise caution and avoid using terms that are not yet widely recognised or understood.
When considering whether to include ‘комплаенс’ in my translations, I must weigh the benefits of using a precise technical term against the risk of confusing readers who may not be familiar with it. In this age of globalisation and digital connectivity, language exchange is rapid, and new terms are assimilated into the wider lexicon quickly. As a translator, my role is to facilitate cross-cultural communication and bridge linguistic divides. Ultimately, my goal is to convey the intended meaning clearly and accurately to my readers. This can be achieved by monitoring emerging trends and anticipating linguistic shifts. By contributing to the assimilation of new words, we can position ourselves as pioneers and contribute to the vibrancy and dynamism of language evolution.
